At first light my family were woken by Ndwiga. He’d run across the grasslands from the woods and was panting heavily. ‘Imamu, I need to speak with you urgently.’

‘What is the matter Ndwiga? What is so important?’

‘I can’t speak here Imamu; I must speak to you away from the youngsters.’

‘Ok, give me a moment.’ He turned to mother. ‘Keep Karamu and Imari here; don’t let them get up just yet. I need to see what the fuss is about.’ He started to head over to meet Ndwiga, so I got up and followed at a distance.

Father met with him and Jitu, one of the other giraffes and they started to speak quietly, so I moved closer to listen to their conversation.

‘We were feeding at the edge of the woodlands, grazing on the foliage, when we saw a wildebeest alone in the grass,’ said Jitu. ‘We could see he was not sleeping but seemed to be in a lot of pain. I wanted to check on him but as Ndwiga said, there could be dangers lurking nearby. So, we came to tell you at once Imamu.’

‘Thank you. Both of you. I will gather some of the others and go and check it out. You did the right thing staying away.’ They both turned and walked back towards the woodlands, and I tried to quickly walk away too, but father soon spotted me as he turned around. ‘Morning son, he smiled. As you are up, you can help me round up the others. And please let your mother know I have gone. I don’t want you coming on this trip Berko, I almost lost you once. I can’t put your mother through that again.’

‘Ok father, but please be careful.’

‘I will. Thank you, son.’
